Description

Kynoch was established in Witton in Birmingham in 1862 by Scottish entrepreneur George Kynoch when he opened a percussion cap factory in Witton.[1] In 1895 he built an explosives factory east of Shell Haven Creek, Essex (now known as Coryton). This opened in 1897, with an estate for employees called Kynochtown. The company produced cordite, guncotton, gunpowder, and cartridges. After World War I many of the UK ammunition and explosives manufacturers were brought together under Nobel Explosives to become Nobel Industries, which was a founding element of Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd (ICI) in 1926 This is a vintage 100 round cardboard box of 16 bore, centre fire 6 shot cartridges with the Purdey loading using EC propellant. E.C. stood for the Explosives Company of Stowmarket who introduced a smokeless powder in 1882. The cartridge cases are headstamped ELEY-KYNOCH 16 ICI monogram 16 (16 bore). The white top wad has printed on it E.C. (Explosives Company of Stowmarket) PURDEY LOADING 6 (shot size). The cartridges have a dark blue paper cartridge case with a brass base and a copper percussion primer. The box measures 8 5/8” by 8 inches and 2 5/8 inches in height. The white box lid is printed in red on all sides as to the contents of 100 16 bore Eley- Kynoch ’PEGAMOID’ waterproof, gastight, metal lined cartridges. The price includes UK delivery and can only be sold to Shotgun Certificate holders ONLY. The cartridges can also be made inert by arrangement so that no licence is required to possess these shotgun cartridge cases in the UK if retained as part of a collection or display. O 2036
