Decorative inlaid gilt brass trigger guards, butt caps and side plates. Finely silver inlaid decoration to the the walnut stocks. (a tiny crack to the fore-end of one stock). The wooden case (23 x 9 inches) is inlaid with brass border and handle to the lid. The case is finely lined in velvet and contains several accessories including a bullet mold, copper 3 way powder flask, screwdriver and cleaning rod. The pistols are 19 inches overall. Both actions are very crisp and in full working condition. In extremely fine condition. The lavish attention given to the silver and gold inlay of English pistols such as this, was expressly intended to provide the recipient with affirmation of the donor’s high esteem, coupled with a recognition of his status, by way of a generous gift. High quality pistols inlaid and mounted in this manner emerged in London in the 1780’s and 1790’s. A good example of a fine pair of Napoleonic period flintlock pistols made for presentation purposes.
