A superb pair of Identified SCOTTISH silver mounted flintlock holster pistols by the famous London gun-maker RICHARDS. Originally made around 1760 for the MACPHERSON CLAN they have been converted to the percussion system probably circa 1840-1860. The lock plates engraved with the makers name RICHARDS, the barrels are both engraved on top in script with the gun-makers address ''STRAND LONDON''. John Richards had a workshop in London at 25 The Strand, from 1760 to circa 1821. He was a very prolific maker and these are some of his very finest work as they have wonderful highly detailed embossed solid silver mounts. 8 inch octagonal barrels struck with London proof marks. Very finely embossed silver grotesque mask butt caps with very clear silver makers mark I.H. (Possibly Joseph Heriot of London circa 1770). Calibre is approx .60 cal. Two silver ramrod pipes and silver hall marked trigger guards. London silver hallmarks stamped to the underside of the trigger guard. Nice quality silver oval escutcheons fitted to the grip on both pistols, each enrgraved and bearing the MACPHERSON CLAN family coat-of arms showing a standing cat with raised ears and motto engraved around the edge ''TOUCH NOT THE CAT BOT THE GLOVE''. Horn tipped wooden ramrods. Overall lengths 13 inches. Actions in good working order with very strong spings. In very good condition with just a few minor minor marks. An outstanding pair of identified silver mounted holster pistols with a family history and made by a famous London maker. Ref 3929.
