A fine English cased .32 Percussion 6 shot Pepperbox revolver, by Williams & Powell of Liverpool. Complete in its original wooden carrying case with accessories. Circa 1845. The pistol engraved on the back strap with the makers name Williams & Powell Liverpool. Williams and Powell had a workshop 29 Castle Street, Liverpool. (1837-59). The percussion pepper-box was first used around the 1830s and was intended for civilian use, but military officers often made private purchases for their own use. James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart (1833-1864) was a U.S. Army officer and later a Major General and cavalry commander for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War (1861-65). In 1857 he was shot in the chest at point blank range with a pepperbox revolver by a Cheyenne warrior, Stuart survived, probably due rumour has it, to a very weak powder charge. Finely engraved side plates, trigger guard and bar hammer. Finely chequered grips. The 2.5 inch barrels and trigger guard retaining most of its it's original blueing. English proof marks stamped on the barrels. The pistol contained in its original wooden carrying case with a brass octagonal escutcheon fitted into the lid, and its original gun-makers paper trade label. The case containing a copper powder flask, steel bullet mold, oil bottle and other accessories. Overall length of the pistol 7 inches. The mahogany case measures 9 X 5 inches. In excellent condition retaining most of it's original blued finish. In good working order. A fine example of an English percussion pepper-box revolver in its original case retaining most of its original finish. Ref 2824.
