INERT DEACTIVATED. The Mills No 36 hand grenade was adopted near to the end of the First World War, replacing the number 23 hand grenade. This is an original, 1918 dated WW1, Mills No 36 MK I, Hand Grenade made by M&C L (Morum & Company Limited, Clock Tower Works, Lewersham, London). The body of the grenade is made of cast iron and retains some of its original varnished finish. The grenade has cast into it at the front M & C L (Morum & Company). The rear of the grenade under the fly off lever has the mould marks 2 over 5. The grenade is fitted with a steel base plug screwed for a baseplate has cast into it No 36 M I M&C/L 8.18 (August 1918 date). The grenade has the correct fly off lever, firing pin and large diameter brass split ring on the safety pin. The fly off lever is stamped M. LTD over L.
