C1840 English Thomas Smith London 50 Bore Percussion Pocket Pistol With Turn Off Barrel. Sn 19780 - 19780

Thomas Smith was a London based Gunmaker with premises at 10 ray Street Clerkenwell & 15 great Portland Street 1829-1830 He then went into partnership with Robert Alden operating as Smith & Alden 1826-1835. Smith is then recorded as working alone again at 55 Parliament Street 1836-41, 3 Bridge Street Westminster 1842-43, 288 High Holborn 1845-47 & 13 Little Compton Street 1849-1860 (see page 204 of British Gumakers Vol.1 by Brown). This a very good percussion pocket pistol made C1840 by Thomas Smith. It is 6 ½”overall with a 2” screw off barrel. The barrel’s smooth bore has staining & residue consistent with age and use. The action and barrel have black powder proofs. Its action is decorated on both sides with foliate panels. One side is signed ‘T.Smith’ the reverse ‘London’. It has its original bag shaped wood grip. The back of the grip is inlaid with void white metal escutcheon. The trigger guard is decorated with a stylised star motif. The weapon cocks and dry fires crisply. The price includes UK delivery.
