The US Army Rock Island produced firearms, munitions and associated leather work to the Union army during the American civil war. Rock island also housed many Confederate POW’s during the latter stages of the war. This is an excellent Saddle 'Bucket' Holster For 45-70 Calibre Cavalry Carbines made by the Rock Island Arsenal. It is made of black hide leather and has iron buckles with leather straps. The open top bucket has brass plate at the throat to provide protection to the leather when holstering a carbine. The bucket is 13 ½” overall length. The leather of the bucket is impressed by the maker ‘ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL’. One tip of the upper leather strap is impressed with ‘T.C’ most likely to the Union’s Tennessee Cavalry Regiment which saw action in the Civil war (The Tennessee Cavalry was organized at Murfreesboro, Nashville, and Carthage, Tennessee and mustered in for a three-year enlistment on July 15, 1862, under the command of Colonel William Brickly Stokes.
